Me Things.
A few years back I was working hard at being the quintessential Los Angeles cliche. I was working at a bar with a film degree collecting dust and zero clue what my next move would be. A friend who worked in the facilities department at 72andSunny asked me if I wanted to come in for an interview. I knew nothing about advertising but I did know a thing or five about how much I hated working in a bar, so I took the interview, got the job, and my journey began.
Since film school I wanted to work in creative development, but I never could figure out where to start. I worked as an editor, a writer, and a segment producer for a number of small companies. I loved all of those disciplines, but creatively, those rolls were just slices of the development process. I wanted to snack on the whole pie. Cue copywriting.
Once I got to 72andSunny, I saw that creatives got to do it all. Concept, write, shoot and edit. I found my unicorn.
In the beginning my job was plunging toilets and restocking drinks, but the whole time I was watching, listening, and talking to anyone who would listen in the creative department. My previous experience taught me the language I just needed a chance to put those skills in action. So I did what anyone would do in that situation: I started bribing admins with off menu snacks to add me to meetings I had no business being in. I asked a lot of questions and I spent time crafting my all agency e-mails. Eventually people started paying attention and I started getting some swings at bat.
